Just before 10am on February 19, 1942, one of Australia's worst moments in history took its toll. It was the first time Australian soil had received an attack from the air, and it wouldn't be the last. It is believed that at least 243 died in those devastating 65 minutes and between 300 to 400 people were injured.
These 260 Japanese planes were sent to bomb Australia as it was thought that this country was a threat during war time. The
modern air defences that were situated in Darwin and the largest floating net in the world at a massive six kilometres long with technology to warn of incoming ships and submarines made many think that Australia was the port for ships and planes of our allies. This was the reason why the Japanese came to destroy Darwin, to take out the threat.
The worst bit was when all this was happening; the government refused to release the truth and therefore announced lies to protect the 'national morale'. This included only announcing that there were only 17 casualties that day which lead to many rumours against the government. Many years had passed with very little knowledge of what really happened that day just to protect the 'morale'.
